Sworn interpreter, hearings and notarial deeds

Sworn interpreter in Wavre
Nivelles, notary's office, town hall

The Court of First Instance of Walloon Brabant sits in Nivelles, while the Wavre justice of the peace settles the disputes of the canton. Our sworn interpreters attend both, along with notaries' offices and the counters of Waterloo, Rixensart, Ottignies or Braine-l'Alleud.

Where our sworn interpreters step in

In each of these settings, the spoken word carries legal consequences.

01

03

Civil status and population

04

Court-appointed expert work

Professional ethics

Impartial, even when it costs the client

Everything said goes through: the hesitations, the sentences that never finish, and the remarks that work against the person making them.

The interpreter advises nobody, summarises nothing, answers for no one and steps aside the moment one of the parties is recognised. These rules are not courtesy: an interpreter who strays from the role weakens the act, and the intervention may be challenged later on.

For that very reason a bilingual relative cannot take on the job before a magistrate or in a notary's office.

  • National register consulted for each assignment
  • Withdrawal as soon as a party is known
  • Secrecy that never lapses over time
  • Full rendering, nothing filtered out
The role

What they do, and what they will always refuse

It is not a matter of temperament: impartiality defines the profession.

Everything is rendered

Clumsy sentences, contradictions and self-corrections pass through unaltered. Nothing is tidied up, condensed or completed on behalf of the speaker.

No advice is given

They answer for nobody, explain nothing and offer no opinion, including when a question is put to them directly.

Any link to a party is declared

If they recognise someone in the room, they withdraw. It is a professional obligation and not a mark of politeness.

They are bound by secrecy

Professional secrecy extends over the whole assignment and never lapses, including long after the file has closed.

Handing interpreting to a bilingual relative weakens the procedure. They are not sworn, they have a stake in the matter, and the other side may ask for them to be set aside. In family matters above all, someone translating for their own people filters without noticing it.

Booking

From your request to the courtroom

Long notice widens the choice, yet a good share of our assignments is settled the day before.

  1. 01

    You set the scene

Give the date, the time, the address, the language, the type of act and the duration you expect. The form takes two minutes.

  2. 02

    Confirmation within the hour

We look for a sworn professional in the language pair concerned and call you back with the price.

  3. 03

    Preparation beforehand

Before the date, the interpreter absorbs the subject matter and the specific wording of the case, to the extent that secrecy permits.

  4. 04

    On the day itself

On arrival they check in with the registry, the notary's clerk or the civil status officer, then introduce themselves to the people summoned.

01

Listing genuinely verified

The check covers the precise language pair, never the language taken as a whole. That detail decides whether the intervention is accepted or refused.

02

Short notice absorbed

Case brought forward, a party discovered the day before to speak no French: in most instances an interpreter frees up within 24 hours.

03

Rare languages taken on

English, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, but also Farsi or Tigrinya. It is the latter that go missing when everything plays out in a few hours.

04

Travel included

No mileage charged across the sixteen municipalities served, nor for reaching the Nivelles courthouse from Wavre, Jodoigne or Perwez.

05

Punctuality

Attendance secured ahead of the time of the summons. A hearing postponed for want of an interpreter does not get retaken the same day.

06

Professional secrecy

A confidentiality agreement is signed, and the interpreter withdraws without argument if any link appears with someone in the file.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Who pays the interpreter?

It depends on the procedure. In criminal matters the interpreter appointed by the court is borne by the State. In civil matters, at the notary's or for a municipal formality, the expense falls in principle on the person who needs to understand. We invoice whoever places the order, and the quote states this before the assignment.

Why is the hearing held in Nivelles rather than Wavre?

Because the Court of First Instance of Walloon Brabant sits there for the entire province. Wavre is the administrative capital but hosts no division of the court; it has a justice of the peace, competent for other disputes. Our interpreters attend both courts with no mileage charged.

How far in advance should I book?

Five working days gives you the widest choice. That said, a large share of our work comes in the day before: one phone call and you will know straight away whether the date can be covered.

Can one person both translate the documents and interpret?

These are two separate accreditations that some professionals hold together. Where a file calls for the translation of documents as well as interpreting at the hearing, we coordinate both and you keep a single contact.

The hearing has been postponed. What happens?

Let us know at once. More than five working days before the date, the assignment is cancelled at no cost. Below that, a fee is due, since the slot had been blocked and other assignments turned down. The amount is on the quote from the outset.
