Sworn translator in Wavre
translations accepted by Belgian authorities
Birth certificate, UCLouvain degree, criminal record extract, foreign judgment: a translator from the national register of judicial experts applies the stamp, and the document clears the counter in Wavre as readily as in Waterloo, Nivelles or Ottignies.

What the authorities ask for week after week
Depending on who wrote the letter, you will read « sworn », « attested » or « certified true ». A single service sits behind those three words.
Civil status
Births, marriages, divorces, deaths, household composition, single status certificates, acknowledgements of paternity. In the residential belt of Waterloo, Lasne and La Hulpe those papers arrive in English, Spanish, Portuguese or Japanese.
Degrees and equivalence
Transcripts, pass certificates, course descriptions, doctoral titles. Enrolling at UCLouvain in Louvain-la-Neuve, or filing an equivalence application with the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, calls for the sworn version.
Court documents
A foreign judgment, a criminal record extract, a petition or written submissions filed with the Court of First Instance of Walloon Brabant, which sits in Nivelles, must go through a sworn translator. The same applies before the Wavre justice of the peace.
Notarial deeds
Sale agreements, deeds of sale, gifts, marriage contracts, estates opened abroad. Families settled in Rixensart, Lasne or La Hulpe generate them all year round.
Corporate paperwork
One registered office, one shareholder or one subsidiary outside Belgium, and suddenly articles of association, powers of attorney, minutes of general meetings or Crossroads Bank for Enterprises extracts have to travel in sworn form.
Vehicles and mobility
Driving licences, registration certificates, European certificates of conformity. Every year families move into the province with a car bought elsewhere that has to be registered again.
One signature, and the document becomes admissible
Put the contents of a sworn translation next to an ordinary one and you will see no difference. The difference sits at the foot of the page, in the person who signs and takes on professional liability towards the authorities.
At the population desk in Waterloo, the civil registry in Rixensart or the registry of the Wavre justice of the peace, nobody rereads the Portuguese or the Ukrainian. One point gets checked: is the signatory listed in the Belgian national register of judicial experts?
That is precisely where files come to a halt. A text produced by a perfectly bilingual acquaintance, or by free software, may well be accurate. It still will not be accepted into the file.
- One stamp, one signature, one liability
- Translator listed in the national register
- Signed PDF first, paper afterwards
- Tables and handwritten notes kept in place
Four situations that leave no choice
The principle fits in one sentence: an authority unable to reread the document in its own language will demand the signature of a sworn translator.
At the town hall counter
Citizenship application, marriage, legal cohabitation or registration in the population register: from Wavre through Jodoigne to Perwez and Braine-l'Alleud, every service holds to the same requirement.
Before the judge
The Court of First Instance of Walloon Brabant sits in Nivelles for the whole province, and that is where litigants are summoned. A document in a foreign language is admissible there only in sworn form. The Wavre justice of the peace applies the same rule.
Recognition of a career
Degree equivalence, admission to UCLouvain, registration with a professional body, an application filed abroad. Every year Louvain-la-Neuve welcomes researchers and students whose paperwork arrives in another language.
File bound for another country
Once the document leaves Belgium, a sworn translation no longer always suffices. Embassies, consulates and foreign authorities frequently add a legalisation, sometimes an apostille.
One question asked beforehand saves you a rejected file. Ask whoever requests the document whether they want the sworn translation alone, the legalisation of the signature as well, an apostille, and whether the work must be attached to the original or to a copy certified by the municipality. Answers differ from one service to the next. If you are unsure how to phrase it, we draft the question with you.
Four steps, no visit required
The amount and the delivery date are settled before you commit.
- 01
You photograph the document
A sharp phone photo is enough for us to price the job. Use the quote form or email, from your kitchen table, your office or the train to Brussels.
- 02
Firm quote within 1 h
The quote states the price per page, the delivery date, and whatever your recipient wants beyond the translation itself: legalisation at the FPS Justice, an apostille to request from the FPS Foreign Affairs, or none of that.
- 03
Translation, stamp, signature
The sworn professional for the language pair translates, keeps the original presentation, then signs, stamps and adds the statutory wording.
- 04
Delivery
You receive the signed PDF first. The stamped paper copy follows by registered mail as soon as your recipient asks for it.
Is an authority asking you for a sworn document?
One photo of the document is enough to start the pricing. You will have the price and the deadline before the hour is out.
Six points we hold ourselves to
Register checked, not assumed
The national register of judicial experts is consulted for the exact language pair before the file leaves. A stamp applied outside the register is worth nothing.
Legalisation at the FPS Justice
Legalisation of a sworn signature goes through the FPS Justice and we handle that step ourselves. Should your destination also call for an apostille, we tell you which FPS Foreign Affairs counter to approach, since that application is yours to file.
Registered mail included
Some services still insist on stamped paper. It travels by tracked registered mail to the address you choose, with no need for you to move.
Express from 24 to 48 h
A closing deadline pushes your document to the head of the queue. Whatever that costs extra is written on the quote, and declining remains an option.
Contractual confidentiality
A confidentiality undertaking binds each translator we work with. Your deeds are never copied into an online translation tool.
Layout reproduced
An officer has to follow both documents side by side. Tables, stamps, handwritten notes and marginal entries are therefore flagged and stay where they were.
Frequently asked questions
Which wording should I use in my request?
The vocabulary depends on whoever wrote to you; the service is the same. Belgium speaks of sworn translators and maintains a national register of judicial experts: acceptance of your document rests on that listing, not on the word used in the letter.
My summons names Nivelles although I live in Wavre. Is that normal?
Yes. The Court of First Instance of Walloon Brabant sits in Nivelles for the entire province, and Wavre has no division of it. Wavre does have its own justice of the peace, competent for other disputes. Either way your foreign documents must be sworn, and our translators and interpreters travel to Nivelles at no mileage cost.
We are moving to Waterloo from abroad. What needs translating?
Usually the birth certificate of each family member, the marriage certificate, sometimes a divorce judgment or a custody ruling, and school reports if the children join a Belgian school. The municipality will hand you the exact list: send it over and one quote will cover the lot.
Do you need the original document?
Not for pricing, a legible photo does the job. For the translation itself the recipient decides. Some services accept work based on a copy, others insist on attachment to the original or to a copy certified by the municipality. The quote states which applies before you confirm.
What is the difference between legalisation and apostille?
They are two unrelated formalities. The first authenticates the sworn translator's signature: it is handled by the FPS Justice, we take care of it, and it adds 3 to 5 working days. The second is a separate certificate, reserved for countries party to the Hague Convention and issued by the FPS Foreign Affairs; you have to apply for it yourself. The quote tells you which one your file needs.
How long does a short certificate take?
Two to five working days under the standard schedule, 24 to 48 hours in express for most pairs. Do you have a hearing in Nivelles or a fixed appointment at the town hall? Mention the date in your first message and the schedule will be built around it.
